How to Choose Which Keywords to Optimize

To obtain targeted traffic for your website, you need to make sure your content contains targeted information. Even if you have the best information, if it is not keyword targeted for a specific audience, it may not receive the traffic you need to generate the income and clientele you desire. The best traffic is presold traffic. In other words, people who are already looking for what you have to offer.

Then, you just need to learn to build a personal brand and trust through your content. Not all websites make it because they do not have a clear plan of how to draw in the traffic they desire. You can be different, by starting out knowing what to do before hand, instead of making a second go at it because you didn’t quite know what to do the first time.

What Are Key Words

Keywords are words or phrases with special significance within a document or website. They relate to the theme of the content and may even be the theme. They are mostly used to help search engines index content according to relevancy to the topic. Their importance to you is how they are used and how they draw traffic to your site.

Key words and phrases capture the essence of the topic or niche of your website. Search engines catalog website links by type according to these. It’s similar to the index files at libraries. (Index card catalogs are now being replaced by in house computerized search engines.) Most non-essential key words are excluded such as conjunctions. Indexing these key words can be both by assignment and by free searching. In other words, you can tell the search engine which words in your document you need it to place in the list of words that bring up your content in a search, and it can find some other words in your content that will bring in alternate search traffic.

The Key is Choosing Your Words Wisely

Make the right mistakes by choosing words people normally use to find the same information. If you find the right first keyword, most the work is done, now you just need to find the secondary and tertiary key words that will draw more traffic. Try to choose words that are in the mid range of selected words.

What do we mean by this? Simply that, if you use a key word generator, test out the words it provides first. Those that draw a few pages of similar content are best. The words that draw huge amounts of traffic will only mean too much competition for you. Then, optimize your articles and website to match those words. Don’t participate in keyword stuffing though. Only use the amount of key words that will contribute to a natural flow within the content. In other words, use them where they will naturally fall in the content. Those search engine indexes can sniff out a keyword stuffer and you will suffer!

Next, you need to go through your content and find words that you think people would look for to find that content. This may not always be what you think. So, to check them out, take those words and then perform a keyword search with them. Find out which words and phrases bring up similar content and similar websites but that won’t also bring you too much competition. Now, optimize your content for those words by using them more often, but still where they would be used naturally. Don’t over use them; this is the surest way to be kicked out of the listings.

No that you have a list, work your way down it to cut out words that do not bring a fair amount of traffic, and those that bring too much competition. Take out those that are not relevant to your subject, and those that would be improper to use. Then, only use those that work well with the content. Do not participate in key word stuffing, hidden text, invisible text, or any other off beat technique that your chosen search engine tells you not to. They will kick you off the web for it!

In Choosing You Words, It’s Not the Only Factor

Start by creating a list of words based on your targeted audience and theme. Then, edit the list to contain key words that bring about websites and web articles similar to yours. Try to use the ones that draw a fair amount of traffic. If you choose those that bring a lot of traffic, you have a lot more competition with other websites.

Market yourself with articles. Use the keywords to generate income generating and personal branding articles that you submit to data bases. Be sure to provide links to your website in your profile pages so that people know where to go to find more information. These articles don’t necessarily need to be exactly about your chosen website topic or product, but most of them should. Aim for about 50% of your published articles on topics pertaining to your website, and the other half about other stuff you know a bit about. This builds credibility in the community. And please, follow the websites guidelines thoroughly, if you are to succeed in staying on that website as a content provider.

Next, generate key word and niche optimized web pages. Make sure they are content rich, and that all your grammar punctuation, and spelling is perfect. Please don't use any fluff or unnecessary content, any hidden content, or too much java or graphics. You need to make sure that what the search engine sees is what your targeted audience also can see. Be sure to perform the research needed to find out what words people use to find similar information to yours. Don’t always rely on key word generators to find the best words for your site.
